Clínica Vila Parc organises a training symposium on sexually transmitted infections due to the increase in the incidence of the disease

| Fomento | News

-  The event, aimed at dermatologists, family doctors, internists, gynaecologists and urologists, aims to improve the quality of care for patients.
-  The incidence of STDs has been increasing significantly in recent years, due to the growing practice of unprotected sexual relations.
-  Infections with human papillomavirus, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis are the most common diseases.

On 9 June, the Vila Parc clinic will organise an update symposium on sexually transmitted infections, aimed at health professionals who most commonly come across this type of case, such as dermatologists, family doctors, internists, gynaecologists and urologists. The training event will be held at the Club de Campo de Ibiza.

The event is motivated by the need to update the knowledge of specialists directly involved in the diagnosis and treatment of these pathologies, taking into account the significant increase in the number of cases that has been recorded for some years. "These are diseases that are seen daily in the doctor's office and, moreover, more and more frequently," says Dr. Eduardo Varas, coordinator of the Dermatology Unit at Clínica Vila Parc. Human papillomavirus, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis are the most common infections, all of which are transmitted through unprotected sex.

The symposium will include the participation of various specialists dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases at leading centres in Andalusia, who will present the latest developments in the approach to HIV, HPV and other diseases with dermatological manifestations. Other aspects will also be discussed, such as risk behaviours and the psychological factors involved, as well as existing diagnostic methods and the main mistakes that are made when requesting tests.

Health training in these diseases does not usually have a great weight throughout the training period of the specialist physician, which is why it usually requires voluntary and independent updating by the physician, either by reading scientific literature or by attending courses, workshops or rotations in specialised services. "With this symposium, we will improve the tools available to specialists to be able to deal with these diseases in an optimal way," says Dr. Vares.

Signs on the skin

Sexually transmitted infections units are usually made up of dermatologists - who are the professionals of reference for their diagnosis -, microbiologists and infectious disease specialists; although the first contact with the patient is usually made by general practitioners or emergency doctors.

Ulcerative lesions on the skin, sores, lumps that look like large bumps or warts, usually in the mouth or genital area, are the signs that usually bring the patient to the clinic. Other symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, crampy urination, discomfort during sexual intercourse or abnormal discharge from the vagina or penis are also symptoms of MTS. These are caused by infections by viruses, bacteria or parasites, which are transmitted from person to person through body fluids or by skin-to-skin contact, as in the case of HPV. Its early diagnosis is essential to avoid its spread, on the one hand, and health complications for the carrier on the other. Treatment usually includes antibiotics in the case of bacterial infections, antivirals for those caused by viruses and small surgical interventions to destroy those skin lesions that require it. Some infections have no curative treatment, which is why these cases require periodic monitoring to avoid further complications.

Place, time and registration:
